There is something pleasing about the Catalina. I’m not sure if it is the unusual plan form, the blisters or the fact that it is a flying boat, but it is a cool plane.

That photo of the people sunbathing on top of the Catalina is from a photo essay in Life Magazine about a guy who turned a surplus Catalina into a flying yacht. Quite a view out of those waist bubbles.

I’ve always wanted to have a private PBY or really any other large flying boat. A JRM mars would make a kickass flying house. The PBY with all of the women lounging on top is the same plane that is in the pictures of a rusted out PBY in the desert.

I remember that pic, I’m amazed at the weight on the wings. Given the strength needed for those wings I guess it’s not surprising, but it looks like a lot. Even assuming each person is only 150lbs on average its a lot.

Flying boats are the best planes and the best boats.

According to the article linked above ( http://go.redirectingat.com/?id=33330X1169… ) it is not, apparently multiple people did the flying-yacht thing with PBYs

What a coincidence as I’ve spent the past week at work listening to the audiobook: The Rising Sun: The Fall of the Japanese Empire 1936-1945 by John Toland. PBYs got a lot of shit done. The book is fascinating, politics and the pursuit of peace sure are muddy, and decades later, teaching it in the form of myth in public school doesn’t make it any better.

Oh my word. What a time to be alive. Those pictures are great. I’ll take it over a Gulfstream.
